Full Spectrum CBD v. CBD Isolates

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

If you have any experience within the CBD market you have probably heard of the terms “full spectrum” and/or “isolate.” So, what do these terms mean? Why is the guy at the store telling me about this entourage effect? Is one better than the other? Great questions. In this post we are going to talk about the difference between a full spectrum CBD product and a CBD isolate product, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Let’s start with full spectrum.

Full Spectrum

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural cannabinoid found within the cannabis (hemp) plant. CBD is only one of the 100 some compounds found within the hemp plant. A few other common cannabinoids include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabinol (CBN), and cannabigeral (CBG). The main difference between a full spectrum CBD product and an isolate CBD product is that the full spectrum product contains several other cannabinoids and compounds found within the hemp plant, as opposed to an isolate which contains only CBD. Full spectrum also contains a variety of essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, protein, terpenes, flavonoids, and fiber. So why is this important?

The entourage effect. You may have seen this term scrolling through CBD articles on the internet or heard it from your local shop employee, but what does it really mean? The entourage effect is essentially using the whole plant (full spectrum) to receive the most benefits from your CBD product. This is a result from the many components within the cannabis plant interacting with your body to produce a stronger influence than any of the components acting alone. Think of it as a sports team. Each person on the team has a specific role to help the team win the game. If any one player or role was removed, the team would have a much more difficult time winning the game (producing the best effects). Full spectrum is like having the whole team, while an isolate is like having just a goalie. Not ideal.

There is an enormous amount of evidence suggesting that medical substances are more effective in their whole and natural state. One key study was done at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Hadassah School in 2015. This study showed that full spectrum was much more effective than CBD isolate in treating conditions, especially when fighting pain and inflammation. The study not only showed that the full spectrum extract provided better relief, but also acted faster and the effects lasted longer. Full spectrum products combine all of the compounds to synergistically out perform any single compound, including CBD.

Isolates

CBD isolate is often sold in its crystalized form

CBD isolates on the other hand, as you have probably figured out by now, are just as they sound- they only contain cannabidiol (CBD) and not any other beneficial compounds found within the hemp plant. CBD isolates are created by filtering out all of the other compounds until you are left with only CBD in the extract. Isolates do not contain any of the beneficial terpenes, vitamins, minerals, essential fats and proteins, and other cannabinoids that work together to produce the beneficial affects you are looking for.

Which is Better?

There is a reason we offer only full spectrum products. Each cannabinoid and compound within the plant offers different benefits for specific conditions and ailments. We created Summit Oils to provide you with the best choice to addicting and harmful pharmaceutical drugs. To do this, we decided the best way would be by providing users with a full spectrum CBD product. Full spectrum products are proven to be much more effective than CBD isolates.

How do I know if the product is full spectrum or an isolate?

Generally, the product will advertise “full spectrum” somewhere on the label. If you do not see this, chances are it is not full spectrum. A way to be sure is by scanning the QR code on the bottle or viewing the test results online. If the results are only showing CBD than you are looking at an isolate. Also, be sure that the company is testing for things like pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial to make sure you are using a quality product with quality ingredients.

Conclusion

Full spectrum CBD products not only help to relieve pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and help you sleep, but are also known to keep your body strong, fit and healthy. At Summit Oils, we completely stand behind our full spectrum products. While there may be very limited benefits to isolates, they are few and far between.
